The United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNAN), a civil society arm of the United Nations has identified education as a critical tool to combat ignorance, prejudice, and injustice for impact in Nigerian communities and abroad.

The Association made the call in a statement in Lagos in commemoration of the 78th Day United Nations (UN) Day at the Russel International School, Victoria Garden City, Lekki, Lagos.

UNAN's President, Joan Agha, said in the statement that her Association organised the forum to create awareness among youths on what the United Nations Day is all about.

Agha noted that education empowers individuals to make a positive impact on the communities and world at large.

According to the UNAN boss, students have crucial roles to play in the actualisation of the UN principles, values, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), even as she tasked them with the responsibility.

" Today, we gather to reflect on the theme of this year's United Nations Day: "Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All."

“Dignity, freedom, and justice are not just words; they are the cornerstones of a better world that we all strive to build.

"As students, you play a pivotal role in the realization of these principles. Your generation holds the key to shaping the future, ensuring that dignity, freedom, and justice are not mere aspirations but everyday realities for all. Education is a powerful tool to combat ignorance, prejudice, and injustice. It empowers you to make a positive impact on your communities and the world at large.

“So, as you reflect on the importance of Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All, consider how you can contribute to these ideals in your own lives. Whether through community service, advocacy, or simply by being an empathetic and responsible global citizen, each of you has the potential to make a difference.

"Let us embrace the spirit of United Nations Day as a reminder of our shared responsibility to create a world of Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All.

“Your generation has the opportunity to be the architects of a brighter future, and I have no doubt that you will rise to the occasion,” she added.

Pastor Andy Otike-Obaro said that why UNAN chose to teach students about the UN goals is to stir their creative and resourceful young minds towards proffering solutions for global issues.

Otike-Obaro, while making his presentation, titled, ‘UN – Global Recognition’ also said that awareness creation about the UN principles and goals would help in addressing issues such as human rights abuses, poverty, literacy, climate change and terrorism in society.

In her remarks, the Vice President, UNAN, Mrs. Ijeoma Nweke corroborated with earlier views, urging the students to always uphold the principles of the UN, which is built on dignity, freedom, and justice for all.

"Mrs. Ifeoma Nwuke, UNAN Project Officer shared similar views with Nweke. Both officials said that the essence of marking the global event is to create awareness about the United Nations, noting that UNAN as a group is an Ambassador of the UN in Nigeria to enlighten people about the UN goals.

"So, today as members of UNAN, we are here in this school to also create awareness about the United Nations because that's part of it.  We are just like UN representatives in Nigeria to enlighten people, especially the young ones who are coming up to know what the UN stands for, and ensure that as they grow up they align to these goals and ensure that we have a wonderful and free world today," they corroborated.
