Dr Joan Agha, President, UNAN

The United Nations Association Nigeria (UNAN) has urged every Nigerian to engage in charitable and humanitarian work as part of efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contribute to societal welfare.

Dr Joan Agha, President, UNAN made the call following the recent .visit of her organisation to Mother Theresa Orphanage homes, Ketu, Lagos, stressing that charity plays an important role in addressing the most pressing issues facing today’s humanity.
The issues include poverty, hunger, inequality, and access to education and healthcare, she said in a statement that UNAN released to commemorate the International Charity Day.
In view of this, the United Nations Association of Nigeria visited Mother Theresa Orphanage homes, in Ketu, Lagos, as part of its commitment to charity and humanitarian activities.
Agha said, “The children in the home are living with cerebral palsy and other rare conditions the majority of the medications used to manage their conditions are not common. Therefore, we donated medicines to the home and some provisions that will last a while according to their request.”
The statement reads, “On this auspicious occasion of International Charity Day, the United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNAN) joins the global community in celebrating the spirit of compassion, generosity, and solidarity. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of charitable acts and their significant impact on the well-being of individuals and communities worldwide.
“Charity, in its various forms, plays a vital role in addressing the most pressing issues facing humanity today, including poverty, hunger, inequality, and access to education and healthcare. It is a fundamental expression of our shared responsibility to promote social justice and uplift the most vulnerable among us.
“In Nigeria, the United Nations Association acknowledges the remarkable efforts of countless individuals, non-governmental organizations, and community groups who work tirelessly to alleviate suffering and improve the lives of their fellow citizens. Their selfless dedication to charity embodies the spirit of Ubuntu, the African philosophy of interconnectedness, which emphasizes that we are all bound together in a shared humanity.
This year's International Charity Day theme, "Sharing Compassion and Solidarity," resonates deeply with our mission at UNAN. In the face of ongoing global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and conflicts, we must unite in our commitment to make the world a better place for all. It is through acts of kindness, generosity, and solidarity that we can build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future.
“As part of our ongoing efforts, United Nations Association of Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to promoting charitable actions across Nigeria. We encourage individuals, businesses, and organisations to take part in charitable initiatives that support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contribute to the well-being of our society,” Agha added.
She urged every Nigerian to engage in acts of kindness, whether through monetary donations, volunteering, or simply helping those in need, let us show kindness and empathy to fellow citizens.
The UNAN President, also called on Nigerians to support local charity organisation.  “Invest in and support local charitable organisations that are working tirelessly to address the unique challenges faced by communities across Nigeria,” she said.
Agha enjoined every Nigerian to be the Advocate for Positive Change. “Use your voice to advocate for policies and initiatives that promote social justice, equality, and inclusivity.”
She called for education and awareness creation. “Raise awareness about the importance of charity and its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) inspiring others to take action.
“Let us come together as a nation to exemplify the true spirit of compassion and solidarity. Through our collective efforts, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those less fortunate and work towards a more just and equitable world.”
