The United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNA-Nigeria) has marked this year’s International Day of Charity by launching Community Outreach Programs aimed at providing food palliatives to underserved communities in three States - Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. This initiative reflects UNA-Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of giving and promoting sustainable development across the nation. The outreach efforts are designed to support the indigent and reinforce the importance of charitable actions in enhancing community welfare.
The International Day of Charity offers an opportunity for global solidarity with the poor and those in need anywhere. The call for Charitable actions permeates across all religions and cultures, thereby, instructing everyone to be kind and merciful to one another, said Dr Joan Agha, President UNA-Nigeria.
"The Day is designed and dedicated to volunteerism and philanthropic actions to eradicate extreme poverty and suffering experienced by people in different places. It provides practical and Socio-Economic bonding that contributes to the creation of possible inclusiveness and the process of attaining more resilient societies in the future. Charitable (love of God) actions in situations of crisis are well known to us all, even in cross-cultural, traditional, and historical ways," Agha, spoke in a statement signed by Engr. Dr. Oluremi Olutimo.
The United Nations as an international global organization that is ever committed to humanitarian affairs around the world, recognises September 5, of every year as the International Day of Charity in commemoration of Mother Teresa of Calcutta who was honored with the Nobel Peace Award by the UN General Assembly.
"As a leading advocate for the United Nation’s ideals and goals in Nigeria, UNA-Nigeria has organized a series of events and initiatives to mark the Day. These activities will include, Community Outreach Programs which include, sharing food as palliative to the indigent in three communities. The communities include Okun Ajah Alpha Beach Community, Lagos State; Evo Kingdom in Woji Community, Rivers State, and Angwan Garogo Community, FCT, Abuja," said UN-Nigeria in the statement.
"The Association also conducted an advocacy campaign on charity through the media on Radio and Television in the three States to boost awareness.
"The International Day of Charity is an opportunity for us to come together as a community and make a positive difference in the lives of others. UNA-Nigeria believes that everyone can give back, no matter how small or large. By working together, we can create a more just, equitable, and sustainable world for all," said UN-Nigeria in the statement.
UNA-Nigeria therefore invites the public to join them in their upcoming events and initiatives.
