Nestle: Infant Formula With Excess Sugar Not Registered, Circulated In Nigeria - NAFDAC

  In reaction to the investigative report which indicted the global food giant, Nestle, NAFDAC has confirmed that the Nido follow-up infant milk formula under inquiry is neither registered in Nigeria, nor  circulated in the country.  Prof Christianah Adeyeye, Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) made the clarification in a press statement tagged, “Nestle Adds Sugar to Infant Milk Sold in poorer Countries: NAFDAC's Response.” In the statement, Adeyeye explained that the range of Nestle Cerelac infant cereals distributed in Nigeria were duly registered with NAFDAC  in line with local and international standards.  She said  that the range of Nestle Cerelac infant cereals distributed in Nigeria were duly registered with NAFDAC in line with the Nigerian Industrial Standard for Foods for Infants and Young Children – Processed Cereal Based foods (NIS 256:2010).  Further, she said they meet the Codex Standard for Processed Cereal-based F

While restating that it maintains the nutritional value of its products for infants and young children, Nestle Nigeria refuted the allegations of adding sugars to infant formulas in Nigeria. Nestle assured that in Nigeria, like everywhere in the world, "We do not add sugars (sucrose and glucose) to infant formulas for children aged 0-12 months. Also, all our growing-up milk (12 – 36 months) in Nigeria has no added sugars." The Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA), the enrollment of students in the state's health insurance scheme has significantly reduced out-of-pocket expenses among them, thereby enhancing their access to immediate healthcare.  Students who become ill can now easily visit their institution's clinic or sick bay for treatment. Disclosing this was Dr. Olusola Akande, Executive Secretary of OYSHIA, who noted that the premium for the health insurance scheme goes as low as N13,500 per annum for each person in the State, adding that the informal sector is also accommodated and allowed to pay every month.
